Woodyard Memorial Library subscribes to the Library Bill of Rights as adopted by the American Library Association and its subsequent amendments. This document reads, in part: “As a responsibility of library service, books and other library materials selected should be chosen for values of interest, information and enlightenment of all the people of the community.” We realize that everyone’s tastes are different, and that it is our responsibility to provide materials on a multitude of subjects and viewpoints, in many styles.

If you honestly feel that a book or other item in our collection does not belong in the library of a free society, we invite you to fill out the Reconsideration of Material Form and leave it at the front desk. The desk clerk will see that it is given to the library director, who will be in touch with you regarding your complaint.

The Dora B. Woodyard Memorial Library believes in the rights of a free press guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States of America. We further believe that the parents of a child are the only people who should be allowed to monitor the reading, watching or listening activities of that child. Conversely, we believe that it is every parent’s duty to monitor his/her child’s activity, and that this is not the prerogative of the library.

Procedures for Handling Formal Complaints

The following steps will be used when an individual feels that further action beyond informal discussion is necessary to address concerns about library resources. For the duration of this process, the material in question will remain in circulation in the collection library.

1. A concerned patron who is dissatisfied with earlier informal discussions will be offered a packet of materials that include the library’s mission statement, selection policy, reconsideration form, and the Library Bill of Rights.

2. Patrons are required to complete and submit a reconsideration form to the library Director which includes a completed form and a written synopsis of the material to be reconsidered. The synopsis may not be copied from the book jacket and must be in the requestor’s own words.

3. The director, with appropriate professional staff, will review the reconsideration form and the material in question, to consider whether its selection follows the criteria stated in the collection policy.

4. Within 15 business days, the director will decide and send a letter to the person concerned who requested reconsideration, stating the reasons for the decision.

5. If the individual is not satisfied with the decision, a written appeal may be submitted within 10 business days to the Board of Directors.

6. If the board plans to address the appeal at their board meeting, the individual will be notified of when and where the meeting will be held.

7. The Board of Directors reserves the right to limit the length of public comments.

8. The decision of the board is final.

DORA B. WOODYARD MEMORIAL LIBRARY RECONSIDERATION OF MATERIAL POLICY Updated 12/10/25 The Dora B.
